Next Interior is here for current and future generations of Americans

A group of five elk stand in a grass-shrub habitat, with tall, wind-blown sand dunes in the mid-ground, and wooded mountains are in the background.
The Department of the Interior brings the American people amazing places like Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve - which the elk also enjoy.

Next Interior supports the mission and the people of the Department of the Interior to benefit current and future generations of Americans.

We stand for a strong U.S. Department of the Interior that is able to realize its full potential in serving the Nation. This means:

  • Elevating what Interior does for Americans every day, so we don’t take it for granted. When things are taken for granted, they can disappear right before our eyes.
  • Equipping you, your friends and relatives—everyone who cares about what Interior does for us—can take action to advocate for Interior.
  • Engaging decision-makers to insist they adamantly support and provide the resources for Interior to follow through on our Nation's commitments. And engaging them to shape the next chapter of Interior's work!
  • Supporting the people who make Interior what it is today, and who will make it what it is tomorrow. Investing in the culture of public service that runs in their veins, nurturing a culture of learning for how to improve the next Interior.

A Roadmap

For Next Interior

March 2025: Launch Next Interior via social media and other outlets.

March - May 2025: Develop additional resources to help people take action to support Interior. Establish a tempo for engagement. Articulate specific goals and objectives. Begin releasing research that everyone can use to advocate for Interior.

June 2025: Evaluate the status of and need for Next Interior to continue, to grow, or to be laid down.

Next Interior is not a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization...

Yet.

Establishing a non-profit organization takes time, and we haven't had that time yet. If there is an appetite for Next Interior to be sustained, then we will pursue that recognition. Until then, if you want to make tax-deductible donations, consider options for how to Take Action with other organizations!

Who is behind Next Interior?

Next Interior was launched in March, 2025, by Jacob Malcom, former Director of the Office of Policy Analysis for the U.S. Department of the Interior (Office of the Secretary - Office of Policy, Management, and Budget). He also served as the acting Deputy Assistant Secretary - Policy and Environmental Management before resigning in February 2025. Early in his career, Jacob worked in the field for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Park Service in Virginia, Michigan, New Mexico, and Arizona. When not advocating for Interior and what it delivers for the Nation, he's very likely out enjoying public lands and waters, on bike or packraft or foot, usually with family.

But just like Interior can't go it alone, Jacob doesn't want to go it alone with Next Interior. So he's working on organizing. Interested in contributing content to Next Interior?
